0-Home | Erotic New York interview
in December 2009 I interviewed the folks behind Erotic New York and www.eroticnewyork.com

What's your overall goal for Erotic New York?

Our goal at EroticNewYork.com is to empower the erotic explorer - from the curious to the converted - to discover and learn more about everything erotica in New York City. EroticNewYork.com is a companion to ourfamous print guidebook, Erotic New York: The Best Sex in the City, published since 1997 and currently selling at the Museum of Sex. With expanded sections, EroticNewYork.com brings readers entertaining, sexually frank, no holds (or holes) barred reviews of NYC’s most titillating “vices” – bars, clubs, fashion, art, dating, sex hotels, adult toy-stores,literature, sex clubs & erotic parties, romantic restaurants, performers, body modifications, erotic edibles, and much more. Our sexpert writers and researchers scour the city for the newest and best in sex. For quick and dirty navigation, all our reviews feature our unique orgasm rating – from multiple orgasms ornone at all – which changes over time based on reviews submitted by readers. EroticNewYork.com is an interactive site between our writers and readers so that our reviews are as comprehensive and informative as possible. Further, our celebrity bloggers provide sexy, entertaining, and insightful looks into their own down and dirty erotic explorations.

Who is the typical man and woman that reads Erotic New York?
EroticNewYork.com welcomes everyone, whether you’re straight, gay, lesbian, bi, transgender, male, female, single, in a committed relationship, married, polyamorous, or somewhere in between. There is no such thing as a typical reader, because we are each unique in our erotic exploration.

I like that you have a good cross section of bloggers and articles on all subjects and situations in the sex and erotica realm. There are people who might not realize there is such a thing as etiquette in strip-clubs, or that there is a best way to choose a vibrator.
Absolutely! By following proper etiquette, whether you’re in a bdsm scene or at a strip club, you’ll feel more comfortable and not diminish the experience for other people. At EroticNewYork.com, we take our sexual health and safety very seriously, so respect for oneself, respect for others, and adherence to the particular rules of the scene allow all of us to have a positive, fun, and safe experience. Further, we want to educate our readersthrough our reviews, so that they are savvy consumers. In “How to Pick a Vibrator”, we’ll guide you through the process of buying a vibrator, whether you’re a personal appliance virgin or looking to beef up the goody drawer.

Without question, the meat-and-potatoes of the site are the reviews and the blog posts. What does it take to be a blogger/reviewer for Erotic New York, and are you looking for others?

Our talented writers and bloggers have a healthy voyeuristic and adventurous spirit! Anyone interested in joining the EroticNewYork.com writing team can email us at info@eroticnewyork.com.

How does one submit info for the calendar?
All party and event listings for our Erotic Calendar can be submitted at info@eroticnewyork.com.

What's your definition of erotica?
There is no one definition of erotica. We are each unique in our erotic exploration. At EroticNewYork.com, every fetish, sexual orientation, and erotic practice is not just tolerated, but welcomed and embraced.

What erotica-oriented events do you plan/arrange/attend?

We are planning an EroticNewYork.com party series to launch in the spring of 2010. Each party will showcase local performers and bring awareness to and financial support for organizations that promote health education, social services, and respect for sexual expression. EroticNewYork.com will donate all proceeds from itsfirst party to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, so we encourage all your listeners to come to our parties and help us fundraise for a good cause. Please check our website regularly as we start to post information about our party series. EroticNewYork.com will also team up with other NYC-based businesses to launch new events in 2010. In addition to our own events, our sexpert writers attend and write reviews of all types of erotic events each week.

We had met at an Odd Zero concert, just prior to the launch of the site. They appear to be your flagship erotic band for Erotic New York. Where did you first hear of them and what led to profiling them on your site?

Many of our writers are the original groupies of Odd Zero, and we just love the band. We love their music and the raw intensity of their live shows. Their mix of hard rock, punk, and metal with heavy bass grooves, loud guitar riffs, powerful drums, and lead singer, Mike's intense vocals, is erotic energy at its best. Odd Zero's music provides a cathartic release, whether you're just singing along with Mike or thrashing in the pit with other groupies. We also love the band because of their charitable spirit. In April 2009, Odd Zero helped organize andplayed, "Rock Against Dystrophy", to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and they will do a benefit show with "Music Corps" at Trash Bar in Brooklyn on March 6, 2010 to raise awareness and support for veterans causes with the help of the local metal community in NYC. Odd Zero is in our EroticPerformers section because great music evokes passion on a cellular level; this is the magic of Odd Zero.

From the look of your music category, you seem fond of burlesque performers and the more stylish (over substance) types of bands and artists. Some of my favorite examples are Donna Summer, James Brown, Enigma, Peaches, The Verve, The Rolling Stones, and Cruel Black Dove (who wowed me during the 2009 CMJ Music Marathon). What do you look for in a band or performance artist when it comes to erotica?

We love burlesque performers - they are a quintessential part of NYC - but we’re expanding our Erotic Performers section to include not just burlesque or, as you describe, more stylish performances, but also music and theater. Music is an intensely passionate experience; thus, when we review a band orperformance artist, we’re looking for performers who can evoke erotic energy, whether its thrashing in the pit with other groupies at an Odd Zero show or sitting in the audience of the "Shells" show at Joe’s Pub. We will be adding more music reviews because music and sexuality are intertwined.

How do you wish to expand the music category within Erotic New York?

We want to promote local bands that are talented, so we’ll be going to various venues around town to hear new music. We also invite your listeners to email us at info@eroticnewyork.com to let us know about their favorite bands.

How unique is Erotic New York from other geographic-based sex sites? How different do you want it to be?

EroticNewYork.com is a unique and comprehensive guide to everything erotic in NYC. We enjoy reading other sites, but we find that these sites are limited to a particular community, i.e. gay men, lesbians, s&m, spanking, etc. To ease navigation, we will be adding icons to our content so our readers can focus their search; however, we offer much more than other sites, including our original reviews and blogs, so that everyone - straight, gay, lesbian, bi, transgender, male, female, single, in a committed relationship, married, polyamorous, or somewhere in between – can find on one site – EroticNewYork.com - all the information they need to pursue their erotic explorations in NYC.

Most of your listings seem to be focused on Manhattan. Where's the love for the other boroughs and the Hudson Valley or Long Island?

We love the Hudson Valley and Long Island! There are a lot of erotic events all over the NYC region, sowe will definitely be adding new reviews every week. We invite your listeners to email us at info@eroticnewyork.com if there is an erotic event/party/venue/performer they would like us to review in the Hudson Valley and Long Island.

Do you plan to add other types of media to the site, such as video, audio, or chat?

Absolutely! In the next few weeks, we will be launching our video “question of the week” on our home page. We’ll be introducing ourselves to people on the street and learning more about their erotic explorations. In fact, our first “question of the week”, “What’s your favorite music to listen to when you have sex?” is very timely forthis interview. In 2010, we will be adding other, new types of media to EroticNewYork.com and publishing the next edition of our print guidebook, Erotic New York: The Best Sex in the City. Our guidebook makes the perfect Christmas stocking stuffer or Hanukkah present, so we encourage your listeners to go to the Museum of Sex at 233 5th Ave.(corner of 27th St.) before the guidebooks sell out. And don’t forget to buy one for yourself to carry in your bag or display proudly on your coffee table!
